The autumn days were spent milling cider. One of my favorite passages in the book contains Scree's description of their cider making apparatus. Kristi Petersen Schoonover is a word artist. Eventually, she makes some really bad choices, which take the tale into a really twisted turn. She sees patterns in everything, even the dishes and rotting food piling up in the sink. As she grows up, she becomes obsessed with patterns. Unfortunately, she is the victim of several unfortunate circumstances as she grows up, and winds up getting pretty much stuck on this orchard. Normal childhood stuff, right? So we get the idea right away that little Scree is not quite, well, right in the head. The book starts off with a bang as Scree relates an incident in her early childhood in which she pushes her mother down a well. Scarborough (nicknamed "Scree") is a young girl who lives with her family on an apple orchard. Bad Apple is a great story that kept me hooked from the beginning all the way to the end. Let me start this off by saying I loved this book. I've gotten a couple of pretty good books through that giveaway opportunity. If you haven't checked this out, be sure and do that.

I received this book as part of the Goodreads "First Reads" program.
